Nicole started painting in 2006 one year after suffering a profound loss. She painted from raw emotion and had no training. As time progressed, Nicole decided to dedicate time to learning her craft. She dove into mixed media collage, abstract art, and developed a deep love for mosaics. Encouraged by her mentors to develop her natural artistic gift, Nicole's style has developed into an intriguing mix. Nicole always wants her art to speak to the heart of the viewer in a way that unlocks creativity in them and causes them to feel inspired. She is a Doctoral Student studying Strategic Leadership with an emphasis in Strategic Foresight and plans to use this degree to promote the use of art, creativity, and innovation as key elements for equitable community transformation. Nicole currently resides in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Learn more about Nicole's other endeavors at NicolePertillar.com

Painting pulled me out of a place of darkness and profound grief. I've always been a creative soul who was into the arts but I didn't begin painting until tragedy broke my heart. Painting slowly began to help bring the pieces of me back together. Even though I had lost so much, a new life was emerging. Now that I've been painting and creating for several years, there's no such thing as trash or junk to me. I love taking torn, old, or broken things and breathing life into them by creating something new. It could be paper, glass, old books, a cardboard box...the list is never-ending. I like taking what some consider worthless or broken and creatively revealing its beauty. I believe every stage of a piece carries weight and holds value just as I believe every stage of your life carries weight. Every piece, every color, every layer of you matters. They all work together to form a beautiful tapestry.
Beauty from Brokenness sums up my heart for creating.
